Category 5: Skin Manifestations of Cultural Practices
Photo 39: Scarring
These diagonal scars at the top of the buttocks were from cuts made in the
skin by the grandmother of this East African child "to help her walk" when
she was about 9 months of age. Scars are also common on the face as
cosmetic and religious decoration in many African groups.
