National /Policy Updates
- Since January, the federal government has intensified its efforts to deport and arrest immigrants, invoked new policies to decrease legal immigration pathways, removed legal status for certain nationalities, and more. - In early June, the federal administration issued a travel ban for nationals of 12 countries with another 7 facing travel restrictions. For more details about the countries impacted and an analysis of the ban, see this article from the American Immigration Council.
- The Kaiser Family Foundation recently published updated survey data regarding the impact of federal policies on immigrants in the United States, with one third of respondents stating they’ve experienced worsening health conditions since inauguration due to concerns about immigration status.
- As a federal spending bill works its way through Congress, there are concerns about the impact of Medicaid cuts for a variety of populations. While the bill has not been passed, its current iteration includes penalties for states who have expanded their Medicaid coverage for certain immigrant populations. Both the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Kaiser Family Foundation have recent publications focused on potential impacts if the bill is passed in its current form.
- The Office of Refugee Resettlement recently announced a reduction in Refugee Cash Assistance and Refugee Medical Assistance for individuals who qualify. Starting May 5, 2025, these programs will only offer 4 months of assistance instead of 12.
Local Updates
- Last month, the governor of Washington state signed three immigrant rights bills focused on giving the state more power to inspect private detention facilities, workplace rights for immigrants, and preventing bail bondsmen from enforcing immigration laws.
